Fighting For Your Rights Since 1999

Criminal Defense Lawyer in Michigan

What area of law are you skilled in and why?

My legal skills are based in criminal law. When I decided to go to law school in the late 1980s, I was working for the Michigan Legislature full-time. I was exposed to a wide variety of work attorneys were doing in state government and thought a law degree would enhance my political science/public administration degree from MSU. Little did I know that the Cooley Law School course, Trial Workshop, would redirect my path.

I loved the mock trials and discovered a passion for advocacy. I always favored the criminal cases among the choices offered in the class. When life or liberty is at stake, the fighter in me surfaces.

The first job I sought as an attorney was an assistant prosecutor position with Macomb County to focus on courtroom advocacy in a criminal setting. Fourteen years there honed my skills and provided me with specialized experience in domestic violence, child abuse, and criminal sexual conduct at all levels, from misdemeanor warrant authorizations to jury trials in capital cases.

I carried that experience to the bench as a district court judge when I was appointed to fill a vacancy and elected to retain the position. After piloting a drug court and presiding over a mixed civil and criminal docket, I faced stiff opposition on a later ballot and moved on to private practice. Needless-to-say, criminal defense was my first choice.

In private practice, I have defended adults against a wide variety of offenses, including those in my specialty areas, as well as juveniles charged as adults. My greatest successes have been getting charges dismissed pretrial and helping youthful offenders avoid prison.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, baking and long walks in nature. I have been introduced to yoga and aspire to adopt it as a lifetime practice. I also enjoy jazz, National Public Radio (NPR) and the New York Times online.
